Starting in 2027, the Emmy Awards ceremony will be streamed free of charge on Prime Video, the streaming platform owned by Amazon. The company announced this in its official blog. This is the first time in history that the main US television award will have its own broadcast channel.

What does the deal change?

For the past 70 years, the Emmys have been shown by American broadcast networks — ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. Now the rights are going to a streaming service.

The terms of the new arrangement:

  • the broadcast will be available in more than 240 countries;
  • the contract runs for six years;
  • viewing will remain free;
  • even users without an Amazon Prime subscription will be able to watch the ceremony.

The last point is a matter of principle for the industry. Amazon is refusing to hide the ceremony behind a paywall and is preserving the mass audience that broadcast television has traditionally provided.

Why is this happening now?

The move of the Emmys to streaming coincided with a discouraging trend in television ratings. Ratings for the 78th primetime ceremony on NBC in 2026 fell almost 10% compared to the previous year — after several years of growth.

That said, the absolute numbers are not critical. This year's broadcast audience was 6.9 million viewers. That is noticeably above the historic low of 2024, when only 4.3 million viewers watched the ceremony.

What hurt the ratings?

The 2026 ceremony took place on a Sunday — the same evening as an NFL (National Football League) game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Denver Broncos. Direct competition with American football, the strongest television content in the US, traditionally erodes the audience of primetime entertainment shows.

For Amazon, the deal makes sense: the Emmys remain the television equivalent of the Oscars and the industry's premier event, while the streaming service gains a prestigious event with global reach that no national broadcast network can offer.
