OpenAI Buys Glass Imaging Startup for More Than $300 Million
OpenAI has acquired the startup Glass Imaging for more than $300 million. The company was founded by ex-Apple engineers, the creators of the "portrait mode" in iPhone cameras.

OpenAI, the developer of the ChatGPT neural network, has acquired smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging for more than $300 million. The deal amount was disclosed by The Wall Street Journal, citing data from the company.
Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 in Los Altos, California. Before the acquisition, the startup had raised around $30 million from investors. The company was created by former Apple engineers who worked on the "portrait mode" in the American manufacturer's smartphone cameras.
Glass Imaging applies artificial intelligence to overcome the physical limitations of cameras on various devices. The company's approach differs from common practice. Instead of editing finished photos with AI, the startup uses neural networks to study the specific technical characteristics of smartphones and their cameras in order to produce higher-quality images.
The deal fits into OpenAI's hardware strategy. According to insiders, the company is developing its own devices: smartphones, headphones, and AI-powered gadgets.
The acquisition of Glass Imaging is one of OpenAI's largest hardware moves to date. Buying a startup with expertise in mobile photography suggests that cameras will become a key element of the company's future devices. The technology, which improves photography at the level of hardware and signal processing algorithms, gives OpenAI competencies that are difficult to achieve through software teams alone.
For the market, this is a signal: competition in the AI device segment is shifting from cloud-based models to vertically integrated products. Apple, Google, and Samsung have been building up computational photography in their flagships for years. Now a player whose core strength is generative models is entering this race.
The context deserves separate attention. It was previously reported that OpenAI is exploring the possibility of slowing down the development of advanced artificial intelligence technologies. Against the backdrop of such signals, the purchase of a hardware asset shows that the company is diversifying its business and is not limiting itself to training new models.
The deal also reflects an overall trend of consolidation: major AI companies are buying up narrowly specialized startups to accelerate their entry into new product categories. Whether the strategy pays off will be shown by time and OpenAI's first devices.
