For World Taco Day on October 6, Taco Bell and Duolingo released a limited-edition "Duo Habanero" sauce — named after Duo, the green owl mascot of the language-learning app. The sauce, with fruity notes and habanero heat, is added for free to Doritos Locos Tacos at the chain's US restaurants.

The packaging became part of the communication. The packets feature taco-related phrases in nine languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. The set of languages varies by country and depends on which courses are popular among local Duolingo users.

The activations don't stop there. On October 6, a themed Duolingo x Taco Bell restaurant will open in New York. Loyalty program members in the US will also be able to get a plush Duo owl dressed as a Taco Bell employee with a mini headset — the company plans to give the toys away as prizes.

"Taco Day isn't just about food. It's about a shared love of tacos and the connections they create between people," said Taco Bell Chief Marketing Officer Luis Restrepo. According to him, the word "taco" is understood in more than 30 languages, and together with Duolingo, the chain is turning this "common language" into an invitation for new fans.

Deal context

Taco Bell is a Mexican food restaurant chain founded in 1962. It is part of Yum! Brands and has been actively expanding into international markets in recent years. Duolingo launched its language-learning app in 2012. By the end of 2025, the service's daily audience exceeded 50 million active users, and booking revenue surpassed $1 billion for the first time.

Duo as a marketing asset

The little owl Duo has long been a hero of memes and unconventional Duolingo campaigns. In February 2025, the company announced Duo's "death" and asked users to bring him back to life by earning 50 billion points from lessons. The campaign turned into a social phenomenon: the counter of completed tasks grew in real time.

In May 2026, Duolingo announced the owl's "resignation." The Duo's Great Resignation campaign aimed to draw attention to Generation Z's burnout problem.

For both companies, the collaboration is a way to engage their overlapping young audience through the ironic tone familiar to Duo's fans. Taco Bell gets an additional engagement opportunity for Taco Day, while Duolingo gets a presence in the offline fast-food environment and a brand reminder beyond the app.
