Yandex has restored access to the Direct advertising platform's account dashboard on its website and mobile app. The company's press service announced the news. The interface had been unavailable since October 11, after drone strikes on the company's data centers.

The platform's operation cannot yet be called fully functional. Yandex warned of limitations: statistics may be displayed incompletely, editing settings is unavailable, and some tools are not working. Advertisers currently have access to three operations:

  • launching previously created campaigns;

  • stopping active campaigns;

  • topping up their balance.

The outage affected a significant portion of the Russian online advertising market. More than 630,000 advertisers use the Yandex Direct service, according to the company's press release.

What the Company Says

Advertising campaign performance may decline. Alexey Shtoktov, Director of Products and Technology at Yandex Advertising, explained the mechanics of the outage: "Damage to our infrastructure may have affected the performance of certain campaigns: automated strategies need time to adapt and return to their usual metrics."

Automated strategies are algorithms that manage bids and ad impressions on their own based on accumulated data. After the outage, these algorithms have to "retrain." For advertisers, this means a period of unstable results even after access is formally restored.

Conclusion: the dashboard is working, but the system still needs time to return to its previous performance.

What Happened to the Data Centers

The outages began in early October and accumulated strike after strike. Drones attacked three Yandex facilities over four days:

  • October 8 — a data center in the Ryazan region;

  • October 9 — a facility in Kaluga;

  • October 11 — a data center in Vladimir.

The last strike coincided with the shutdown of the Direct dashboard. Advertisers were unable to fully manage their campaigns through the platform's interface for almost a week.

The Scale of the Consequences

Not only the company's own services were affected. The outages impacted Yandex Go, Mail, Yandex Pay, and other Yandex products. Problems were also recorded at more than 10 services of server tenants — companies that hosted their equipment at Yandex facilities. Among them:

  • the classifieds platform Cian;

  • a number of developers (housing construction companies);

  • the dating service Twinby;

  • other tenants.

This demonstrates the vulnerability of a model in which many services depend on a few large data centers. One physical facility — and an immediate cascade of failures at dozens of companies across various industries.

For the advertising market, the consequences are twofold. On the one hand, access has been restored and basic operations are available. On the other, the automated strategies on which a significant portion of Direct campaigns are built are temporarily performing worse than usual. Advertisers should check their statistics after the data normalizes and avoid making hasty decisions based on incomplete figures.

Yandex did not give a specific timeline for the full restoration of functionality. The company also did not disclose how exactly the strikes affected the platform's revenue during the outage period.

The practical takeaway for the market: access has been restored, but limited, and advertisers should allow extra time for campaign metrics to stabilize.
