HubSpot Introduces Spending Limits on AI Credits and Flexible Seat Deductions
HubSpot is introducing spending limits on AI credits (150% of the monthly quota by default), seat-to-credit exchanges, and flexible payments. The reform follows the model change in EMEA on October 1.

HubSpot announced on Thursday new spending control tools: account-level limits for AI credits, the ability to exchange unused licenses for credits, and flexible payment options when exceeding the monthly quota. By default, the initial cap will be set at 150% of the customer's monthly quota — 50% above the base volume.
The changes come two weeks after a more radical reform: on October 1, HubSpot moved new customers in the EMEA region from the traditional product model to pricing based on platform editions, seats, and usage credits.
"No one should have to hold back on fully using AI because they don't know what the bill will be," said Jon Dick, HubSpot's Chief Customer Officer, in the announcement.
Why Are Limits on AI Spending Needed?
Paying for AI features based on consumption makes monthly budgets unpredictable. Unlike a fixed price per seat, credits burn up as automated workflows and AI agents run, making it difficult to forecast the final bill.
To rule out sudden charges, HubSpot is introducing account limits on credit spending. Administrators will be able to set caps to match exact monthly budgets. The company is also expanding the ways credits can be purchased:
- fixed monthly packages;
- pay-as-you-go for peak loads.
These mechanisms give operations teams "circuit breakers" for scaling AI within the company without the risk of bill spikes.
How Is Subscription Management Changing?
HubSpot is adding the ability to change subscription configuration mid-cycle. Customers can now:
- exchange unused seats for credits;
- switch between suitable license types without terminating the contract;
- set hard limits on marketing contact tiers to rule out automatic unplanned upgrades as the database grows.
The last measure addresses a long-standing pain point for database managers: growing contact lists used to automatically push customers into more expensive tiers.
HubSpot believes these levers will help marketing leaders keep spending aligned with actual platform usage.
How Does This Differ from the EMEA Reform?
Thursday's announcement and the EMEA reform are steps of different scale. The EMEA model, in effect for new customers since October 1, involves purchasing unified access to the platform instead of separate products like Marketing Hub or Sales Hub. The structure includes Starter, Professional, and Enterprise editions with usage credits, and the traditional contact tiers have been replaced with pricing based on email send volume.
Thursday's controls, by contrast, apply to existing subscription management structures — including limits on contact tiers.
Both initiatives answer the same customer demand: budget predictability in an era when the share of AI spending in the bill keeps growing.
