OpenAI has introduced a reworked onboarding process for advertisers: now a campaign in ChatGPT can be created in less than 60 seconds. The update was announced during a webinar for marketers held earlier this month.

The company supplemented the announcement with an incentive familiar to every marketer: new advertisers will receive $500 in ad credits on top of $500 in ad spend.

Why OpenAI Is Doing This

The advertising initiative comes at a challenging moment for the company. According to The Wall Street Journal, OpenAI told investors that revenue grew 18% quarter over quarter, but losses also increased. The company is preparing for an IPO amid strong investor interest in the AI sector.

Searching for a path to profitability, OpenAI is fighting for a share of the advertising market. According to an Emarketer forecast, marketers will spend more than a trillion dollars on advertising in 2026. OpenAI's central argument: ChatGPT is an attractive advertising platform because users come to it en masse with a wide variety of queries at different stages of purchase intent. According to Reuters, the app's monthly active users have reached one billion.

"People use ChatGPT to discover new products, explore options, and ultimately decide what to buy," said Christin Klein of OpenAI's global advertising solutions team, co-host of the webinar. "The difference is that what used to be a fragmented journey across different sites, reviews, offline and online channels is now consolidated in ChatGPT. That creates a truly unique opportunity for marketers."

How It Works

Zoheb Hajiyani of OpenAI's product team described the mechanics of the new onboarding. The advertiser goes to the website, enters the URL of their resource, and clicks the "Ad Preview" button. OpenAI's model analyzes the business's goals, product line, and target audience, and also suggests which user scenarios within ChatGPT the campaigns make sense to appear in.

The model then generates an ad — creative and copy — which the advertiser can edit. The system will ask for final details: campaign geography, bidding strategy, and billing information. After that, according to Hajiyani, it's "off to the races."

A campaign can also be built with an agent in the ChatGPT Ads Manager plugin inside ChatGPT itself.

"Our vision for the future is to give every business its own intelligent performance marketer working alongside them inside ChatGPT and Codex. You simply tell the agent: 'Help me get more guests to my restaurant. I have $500 a month, and I don't want to pay more than $5 per table reservation' — and that's it. The agent gets to work," Hajiyani said.

The new interface will roll out over the coming weeks.

Ramp-Up of the Advertising Business

OpenAI has been developing its advertising direction since the product launched earlier this year. Business CMO Colin Fleming recently told journalists that daily ad revenue has grown 25% since the beginning of August.

The company is also expanding its advertising product geographically. Earlier this month, ChatGPT ads started showing in dozens of markets, including Brazil, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, and the United Kingdom — 31 countries in total.

In July, OpenAI published the terms for providing ad credits, defining the criteria for receiving and using them — this laid the foundation for the current incentive program for advertisers. In parallel, OpenAI is promoting ChatGPT itself: as Marketing Brew previously reported, the company is targeting American metropolitan areas with its own advertising, increasing its share of impressions in cities such as Seattle and Boston.

Marketers across industries are testing the channel, but many have previously admitted they are waiting for the platform to add more campaign management and measurement tools.
