Rutube Is Becoming a Social Network of Authors, Not a Movie Catalog

LiveDune studied 172K Rutube videos: entertainment took 48% of the top versus 25% for politics, while Shorts deliver 64% of views but only 22% of the likes in the top 250.

Entertainment content accounts for a total of 48% of Rutube's top, outpacing politics, which makes up 25% of the most popular videos. This is the conclusion reached by LiveDune, a social media analytics service that studied 172 thousand videos published on the platform in August 2026.

To rule out the influence of artificial inflation and paid promotion, the analysts built separate rankings by views and by likes, and then selected for analysis only the videos that made it into both tops.

Politics Leads, but Entertainment Wins

Politics is the largest single topic in the top: 25% of videos. This is to be expected. Russian political bloggers have been actively moving to the Russian video hosting service amid the blocking of their YouTube channels. A telling example is Dmitry Puchkov (Goblin), whose YouTube channel was banned back in 2022, when the service itself was not even being slowed down in Russia.

But it would be wrong to consider Rutube a platform "only about politics." Entertainment follows (19%), then video games (16%) and lifestyle (13%). Combined, the three entertainment categories occupy almost half of the top — 48%.

In terms of engagement rate by views (ERV), news and media lead: the category's median figure is 4.46%. Politics takes second place with 3.83%. Auto-moto and interviews share third (2.83% each), video games are fourth (2.75%), and music is fifth (2.12%).

The Top Is Held Up by Authors, Not Viral Videos

The viral effect on Rutube is weakly expressed. The ranking is shaped not by random spikes, but by content from authors with a stable audience and regular segments. The platform's algorithms take into account not only the content of a particular video, but also who published it.

The frequent use of recurring templates in the titles of top videos points to the same thing — they are often placed even before the video's headline. The audience responds not only to the topic, but also to the familiar format. A practical takeaway for marketers: success on the platform requires systematic work on the channel and, possibly, a personal brand.

Subscribers Don't Guarantee Views

Rutube's algorithm does not directly depend on the number of subscribers. LiveDune pulled the top channels by subscribers and the top by views — the lists overlapped by only 28%. Even at the points of overlap, the correlation is far from direct.

The channel "Sanya in Florida" ranks only 17th by subscribers, but 8th by views. Dmitry Puchkov's channel is 28th and 6th, respectively. The platform is more conservative than other social networks in terms of virality, but it relies primarily on the content of the video and the channel, rather than showing content to those who are already subscribed.

Shorts Deliver Reach, but Don't Engage

Short vertical videos make up 64% of the top by views. However, the platform's emphasis is still shifted toward standard videos — which is explained both by audience habits and by the design of the platform itself.

Among the top 250 by likes, Shorts are noticeably fewer — only 22%, and among the videos that made it into both rankings — 44%. On its own, a short video engages the audience less effectively and is worse at building a permanent base of viewers, which plays a particularly important role on Rutube.

Who Is in the Top Channels

The top most-viewed Rutube channels for June 1 — August 31, 2026, by total views:

  • "Yedim Doma" — 127,962,562;
  • "Komsomolskaya Pravda" Radio — 63,695,495;
  • LISFOX — 43,892,006;
  • "Pyatnitsa" — 35,744,985;
  • "NE FOR"MAT" — 30,536,954;
  • Dmitry Puchkov — 28,921,669;
  • "TVOY KINOTEATR | MOVIE TIME CINEMA" — 27,572,958;
  • "Sanya in Florida" — 27,014,082;
  • "Den TV" — 25,320,830;
  • SeeZee — 24,624,315.

Contrary to stereotypes about the platform, the reach ranking was not assembled from films: the most views go to major media outlets, bloggers, political and entertainment channels. There is only one online cinema in the top ten.

What This Means for Brands

Rutube today is a hybrid of two models of video consumption. On the one hand, the popularity of short vertical videos typical of social networks is evident. On the other, there remains a strong culture of author-driven channels that viewers return to for new episodes.

According to LiveDune's experts, this means a shift in priorities for brands, media, and authors: on Rutube, it is not one-off virality that wins, but regularity, a recognizable format, and working on the channel as your own media outlet.
