Salesforce buys startup Loops so Tableau can answer the question "why"
Salesforce is buying the AI startup Loops, whose analytics explains the reasons behind metric changes. The deal will close in early November, with the technology going to Tableau. The amount was not disclosed.

The deal to acquire the startup Loops is expected to close in early November — Salesforce has not disclosed the amount, but has already decided the fate of the asset: Loops's technology and team will be absorbed into Tableau. This was reported by MarTech.
Loops is a startup in AI-based analytics. It focuses on what traditional dashboards typically leave out: explaining why a number changed. The service tracks business metrics, detects trends and anomalies, and uses machine learning and causal analysis (a method for identifying cause-and-effect relationships rather than mere correlations) to determine what influenced metrics such as revenue, conversion, retention, and engagement.
Its product, Scout, can deliver insights to users via Slack and email. No separate analytics interface needs to be opened.
Why does Tableau need this?
The acquisition fits Salesforce's strategy of making Tableau more proactive and closer to an agentic way of working. The logic is simple. Instead of waiting for someone to open a dashboard, study the data, and start asking questions, AI agents should continuously monitor metrics, explain what changed, and suggest actions.
For marketers, this is an in-demand direction. Reporting still mostly stops at the "what happened" stage. It's harder to understand what caused the change and whether anything should be done about it. Loops is designed precisely for that second step.
What does this change for practitioners?
The main question is how much marketers should trust an AI system that moves from recording correlations to asserting causes and recommending actions. Loops's value lies in reducing the manual work of analyzing metric fluctuations. But the outcome depends on two things:
- the quality of the underlying data;
- the system's ability to distinguish a real driver from a plausible explanation.
Salesforce clearly sees this as the future of Tableau: less passive reporting, more continuous interpretation. The verdict cannot be delivered yet. The amount has not been disclosed, the product is being integrated — marketers will have to test the claims on their own data.
