CMO Tenure Has Shrunk by a Third Over 16 Years
A survey of 13 thousand American marketers showed that CMOs who took office from 2022 onward work an average of 2.6 years versus four years in 2010 — a 35% drop.

The average tenure of marketing directors in the U.S. has fallen by 35% over 16 years. That is the conclusion of a study conducted by recruiting company Findem together with the networking platform CMO Huddles.
The survey covered 13 thousand American marketing professionals from companies with more than 100 employees. The results confirm what media experts and agency staff have long observed in practice: their clients on the client side rarely stay in top positions for long.
The figures look as follows. Marketing directors who started their jobs in 2010 held the post for an average of four years. Those who took the CMO seat starting in 2022 stay in the role for only 2.6 years. That is the 35% decline.
The median tenure for currently working CMOs is 36 months — three years.
The trend speaks for itself. Over a decade and a half, the position of marketing director has become noticeably less stable. Companies increasingly have to search for a new marketing executive, while the specialists themselves have to change jobs more often.
For brands, this means more frequent changes in marketing strategy. Each new CMO typically brings their own vision and revises budgets and priorities. For agencies and media partners, shorter horizons for client leaders translate into less predictable long-term contracts.
The Findem and CMO Huddles study is one of the large-scale measurements of this trend: a sample of 13 thousand respondents makes it possible to speak of a statistically significant picture across the entire U.S. market rather than isolated industry cases.
