WPP has promoted Adam Gerhart to the role of the holding company's Global Chief Client Officer. In his new position, he will oversee relationships with key clients across the entire WPP network.
This personnel decision affects three levels of the group's management at once. Let's break down how the structure has been rearranged.
What exactly has changed?
Gerhart moves from his post as Chief Client Officer of WPP Media — the holding's media division — to a group-wide role. His former position has been taken by Tamina Plum, who previously served as Global President, Clients at WPP Media.
Gerhart himself confirmed that he took part in the selection of his successor. He said he played a role in the process of choosing the candidate for his former position.
The post of Global Chief Client Officer became vacant after Jane Geraghty. She combines two roles: Global CEO of WPP's brand and design division and Global CEO of the agency Landor.
In total, one reshuffle changed three positions. The conclusion is simple: WPP is maintaining continuity by promoting trusted people from within.
Who is Adam Gerhart?
Gerhart's career in the group began in 2003 at the media agency Mindshare. He worked there for more than 20 years. The only exception was a short period at Publicis in 2004.
In effect, we are looking at an executive who grew up within WPP's media business. He knows the structure from the inside — from the agency level to the holding level.
Now his area of responsibility is expanding from a single division to the entire network. Conclusion: the group is betting on continuity and deep knowledge of clients, rather than on an external candidate.
Why does the holding need such a role?
The role of Global Chief Client Officer involves working with the group's largest contracts, which are served by several agencies in the network at once. Such clients are typically distributed across branding, media, and creative divisions. One person coordinates all contacts and is responsible for retaining the contract.
In practice, this is one of the most sensitive positions in the holding. The loss of a major client hits the revenue of the entire group, not just a single agency.
What's next?
Gerhart is now in charge of WPP's key relationships with global clients. Tamina Plum heads the client function at WPP Media. Jane Geraghty continues to lead the brand and design division and Landor.
The reshuffle is complete, successors have been appointed. From here, everything will be decided in practice: whether the new configuration of executives can retain the group's largest contracts.
